Besides scheduled editorial push notifications and real-time alerts for chats, likes, and comments, Retention Pushes help you reconnect with users who haven’t opened the app in a while—automatically and based on proven behavior patterns.

Why retention matters

Building a loyal app audience is all about habit. If users don’t return within the first few days, chances are they won’t come back at all. Retention pushes help break this pattern by delivering relevant, timely nudges that encourage users to re-engage—without manual effort.

How it works

Retention Pushes are sent automatically to users who haven’t opened the app within a defined timeframe. You set the rules—we handle the rest. You can customize:

  • The timing (e.g., after 1, 2, or 3 days of inactivity)

  • The content (headline, text, optional image)

  • The timing of day the push is sent

  • The target audience based on how long the app has been installed

Recommended use cases

We suggest considering two target groups that are proven to respond well:

1️⃣ New Users

Users who installed the app within the last 10 days
This is the most fragile phase where churn is highest. These pushes should welcome, onboard, and highlight app value.

2️⃣ Existing Users

Users who installed the app more than 10 days ago (if your app is live already)
These users know the app already, so the push should highlight fresh content, new features, or reasons to return.

✍️ Customizing your pushes

We’ve prepared a template run down for your pushes, that you can use, but you are of course free to customize it as you like.

You can provide:

  • A headline (max. 50 characters)

  • A message body (max. 160 characters)

  • An optional image to make the push stand out

You can define the time of day when each push goes out. Choose a time when your users are most likely to react—mornings, lunch breaks, or evenings depending on your audience.

📲 Example: For work-related apps, late mornings might work best. For social or community apps, try late afternoon or early evening.

Retention pushes can:

  • Be sent continuously as long as users meet the conditions

  • Be limited to specific dates or campaigns
